Management is about order and stability, with a focus on planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling.
Leadership is about change and adapting to change.
In a small to medium enterprise (SME) there is a degree of overlap between the two functions – each individual needs the mind of a manager and the soul of a leader.
However, research has shown that strong management without leadership, or weak leadership, promotes a too bureaucratic organisation which can stifle performance.
Alternatively, strong leadership with weak management can mean the organisation drifts into change for change’s sake – again leading to poor performance.
Both management and leadership skills are important to an organisation if it is to be successful.
It’s a balancing act.
